Hello, Everyone:
Last fall I started teaching an Intermediate Linkedin class and the reviews have been very positive. The topics we covered were too numerous to cover here, but let me put it simply. These advanced users really “get it” and are using LinkedIn to really move their businesses forward. I will share lots of the tools, ideas, and strategies in the coming weeks.
Profile Tips
I have always talked about the importance of your profile being “beefy” in the respect that it should tell your story the way you want it to be told. Recently I have come up with a comment that seems to resonate with my audiences on this point, and it is that your profile should be written so that your mother could understand it and say, ”That’s my son” or daughter. This is a simple question to ask as a way to step back and see if you are really doing that. With that in mind, if you need technical words in your profile because they show certain certifications and other things Mom “may not get,” you still need to include those words for the credibility factor and the keyword searching function.
Connection Tips
Groups is a great application on LinkedIn. As a matter of fact, it ranks in the top three of most important uses on LinkedIn based on my most recent survey of users in the area. That being said, I get lots of complaints about the number of emails that you get once you join a group. The reason this is happening to so many people is that the default when you join a group is that you will get an email every time someone posts or comments on a discussion, even if they are really just agreeing and not adding any real value to the discussion. My suggestion to you is to turn off that option for all the groups that are not critical to what you are doing, especially the “super groups,” like Link Up Milwaukee, that you may have joined just to get some critical mass in your ability to search as you are growing your own network. These groups have lots of what I consider “chatter,” which usually doesn’t warrant your desire for an email.
Wildcard Tip or Question
If you have a question you would like to ask certain individuals in your network, you can use the Answers function and direct that question, which will be in the form of an email to just the first level connections you choose. This is a great way to get a stronger response than just posting it as a status update, and, besides, it is targeted to the individuals you think would best be in a position to answer the question.
